Tour the World in 30 Books:

I'm excited to be a part of Tour the World in 30 Books, to help bring more diverse books to The CCPL. This tour was put together by Sammie, The Bookwyrm's Den, in order to help with her local public library's Diverse Book Drive.
The CCPL—a small, rural library in an area with a high poverty rate and a very homogeneous population, where people rarely have the means to travel or experience new perspectives. However, the library doesn’t believe that should stop people from learning more about the world around them, so they’re running a Diverse Book Drive through the month of September in an attempt to bring the rest of the world to the county instead. With a focus on MG and YA books, the CCPL aims to expose especially its young patrons to new and diverse perspectives and cultures.

For my part in the tour, I will be reviewing Jackpot by Nic Stone. This book was one of my favorites to read, and it really explored real world issues. Especially, your place in society economically. This was an amazing topic, and it made me really intrigued with the story.

Book Synopsis

Meet Rico: high school senior and afternoon-shift cashier at the Gas 'n' Go, who after school and work races home to take care of her younger brother. Every. Single. Day. When Rico sells a jackpot-winning lotto ticket, she thinks maybe her luck will finally change, but only if she--with some assistance from her popular and wildly rich classmate Zan--can find the ticket holder who hasn't claimed the prize. But what happens when have and have-nots collide? Will this investigative duo unite...or divide?

Nic Stone, the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin and Odd One Out, creates two unforgettable characters in one hard-hitting story about class, money--both too little and too much--and how you make your own luck in the world.

Summary

Jackpot by Nic Stone follows, Rico, a teenager who balances taking care of her brother, working part time, and also going to school. She does all of this to help support her poverty stricken family. One day, Rico is working her part time shift at the Gas 'n' Go, when she sells a winning lottery ticket. After this, she goes on a journey to try to find the winner of this lottery ticket so that she can use the money to help her family, and herself, get out of their struggling financial situation.

Jackpot Review

Jackpot was an amazing book that spoke openly about class, and how your finances affect your life. We see this when we follow Rico as she works to support her family, and when Rico learns more about, Zan, her wealthy classmate. In addition to this, the journey of searching to find the lottery ticket also adds so much more excitement to the story. Jackpot perfectly balanced the fun of the journey with learning opportunities when discussing class issues.

To continue, I liked how we saw that you could have incorrect assumptions about people. Because of this, we got to see how individuals perceptions change once they learn more about each other. This was displayed in Jackpot with Rico and Zan. This really added to what made the book amazing and enjoyable. Also, I learned a lesson while reading this book, and I enjoyed learning it.

My Rating

Jackpot was entertaining and immersing through and through. Because of this, I gave it a 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, and I would highly recommend.
